The Gear Behind Our Event Coverage

What's actually in the bag for a multi-camera event shoot — and why we chose it over flashier alternatives.

People ask about our kit more than almost anything else, usually expecting a list of the most expensive gear we could justify. The honest answer is less exciting: event coverage gear gets chosen for reliability under pressure, not for what looks best on a spec sheet. A camera that drops a file at hour four of a live show is worthless no matter how good its footage looked in a controlled test.

Cameras: redundancy over resolution

We run hybrid mirrorless bodies — currently a mix of Sony a7 IV and a7S III — across two to three positions depending on the venue. The a7S III's low-light performance earns its keep at night events and dim venues where adding lighting isn't an option; the a7 IV covers wider, better-lit setups where its higher resolution gives us more room to reframe in the edit. Both shoot to dual card slots, which matters more than either camera's headline spec: if one card fails mid-event, the second is already writing a backup in real time.

We don't run a single-camera setup for anything billed as "event coverage." One camera means one point of failure, and events don't offer retakes.

Audio: wireless lavs, always a backup

For anything with a speaker, host, or interview component, a dual-channel wireless lav system (we use a DJI Mic setup) goes on the talent regardless of whether the venue has its own PA feed. Venue audio is a convenience, not a plan — soundboard feeds cut out, get gated wrong, or simply aren't available for a mobile videographer to tap into. A shotgun mic on a boom or camera-mounted rig covers ambient room tone and anything the lav misses.

The rule we don't break: if the only audio source is something we don't control (house sound, a single lav with no backup), we treat the shoot as audio-at-risk and plan the edit around cutaways and music beds that can carry a scene if a section comes back unusable.

Lighting: small, fast, and battery-powered

Event coverage rarely allows for a lighting setup — you're working with whatever the venue gives you, adjusting as the day moves from natural light to stage lighting to nothing. A couple of compact LED panels with V-mount battery power handle the gaps: filling a dim interview corner, adding a rim light backstage, or rescuing a poorly lit greenroom moment. Nothing that needs a wall outlet or a lighting assistant — if it can't be set up in ninety seconds between segments, it doesn't make the cut for event work.

Storage and backup: the unglamorous part that actually matters

High-capacity CFexpress and SD cards get offloaded to two separate drives before we leave the venue whenever the schedule allows it — never just one. The failure mode we're guarding against isn't a card dying (dual-slot recording already covers that) but a drive failing on the drive home, or a laptop deciding not to boot the next morning. Footage that only exists in one place isn't backed up yet, no matter how confident that one place feels.

What we deliberately don't bring

Gimbals and dedicated stabilizer rigs stay in the bag for most event work. They add setup time and a second thing that can fail, for a stabilization benefit that in-body stabilization and a competent shoulder-mounted hold already cover for the kind of handheld, reactive shooting event coverage demands. We'd rather have one more spare battery in that pocket than a rig we use for 10% of the footage.

None of this is about chasing the newest release. It's about a kit that's been stress-tested across enough real events that we know exactly how it fails, and have already built the backup for that failure into how we shoot.
